Philadelphia Campaign for Housing Justice
In a city where over one fourth of the population lives below the poverty line, access to affordable housing is a major issue for thousands of its citizens. The Philadelphia Campaign for Housing Justice is fighting for an innovative policy, known as inclusionary housing, to get additional affordable housing built.
Marc Stier has worked with the Philadelphia Campaign for Housing Justice to provide housing for working families unable to find housing. The coalition is fighting to win specific legislation -- called inclusionary housing -- to mandate that developers devote a small portion of their profits into building affordable housing.
The Philadelphia Metro (November 16, 2006) reports:
| The entire state of New Jersey has mandated developers build or pay for homes for low-income residents since the early 1990s. Yet Philadelphia remains without any inclusionary housing law...
“It’s really a test of whether the city’s going to make a commitment to low-income housing,” Marc Stier of Neighborhood Networks said yesterday. “The beauty of inclusionary housing as public policy is it doesn’t cost the city anything directly and if implemented properly, it should reduce economic segregation.” |
The campaign has gotten legislation introduced and is analyzing the data to implement it in the best way. Marc has been there organizing, speaking, and writing.
