Repeal Act 193

Marc Stier co-founded Neighborhood Defense.org to repeal 193 and uphold the right of civic associations to protect their communities.

NeighborhoodDefense.org is a network of civic associations, community groups, community development corporations and individuals dedicated to preserving and strengthening the role of citizens and neighborhoods in decisions about land use and planning in Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Weekly (August 16, 2006) quotes Marc Stier to explain the situation:

“Zoning is the bread and butter of what civic associations do.”

As an example, he points to a 40,000-square-foot housing project slated to go up in West Mt. Airy before the neighborhood association successfully squashed it. “Since this ruling, though, we’d need the homeowner living next door to the development to personally appeal the zoning variance,” Stier says.

While Act 193 is the immediate threat, we will also work to insure Philadelphia neighborhoods have the greatest possible influence over their future. The campaign to repeal Act 193 is still alive and Marc continues to organize with NeighborHood Defense.org.
