Neighborhood Networks
Marc Stier helped found Neighborhood Networks, a culturally and racially diverse organization of Philadelphians dedicated to advancing social equality, economic justice and resource stewardship by influencing political decision-making from a grassroots level.
Neighborhood Network's aim to create a powerful coalition by connecting neighbors at the division and ward levels and by forming strategic alliances with like-minded organizations throughout the City of Philadelphia and, eventually, beyond.
As a movement, it educates, organizes and mobilizes voters to support progressive political and social change and to sponsor or support progressive political candidates in local, state, and national elections.
Until resigning to run for Council, Marc was a member of the Executive Committee and represented the organization on most of its issue activities.
Among the major of achievement of Neighborhood Networks are:
- It organized the campaign to pass the Ethics Reform Charter Change of May 2006 that limited pay to play and the Charter Change that created the new Ethics Board enacted in November 2006.
- It played a major role in the Coalition to raise the Minimum Wage. It contributed the first funds that went towards radio advertisements in the districts of legislators opposed to raising the minimum wage. Marc traveled with Lance Haver to Altoona, the home of Senator Robert Jubelirer, in the first effort to influence a key legislator in his home base.
- It helped organize a petition drive to encourage Rep. Dennis O’Brien to allow the One Gun A Month bill out of the House Judiciary Committee.
- It has been a key player at the Philadelphia Coalition for Housing Justice
- It has supported campaign finance reform and public financing of political campaigns
- It has opposed the casinos in their present location and is supporting Casino-Free Philadelphia's efforts for a citywide referendum
- It is now working for single payer health insurance in Pennsylvania
