Philadelphia Transit Campaign
Philadelphia Transit Campaign
Public transportation is critical to our regional economy. Seventy-percent of Philly's workers use SEPTA to get to work. It is vital to our children because SEPTA is our primary public school transportation system. It enables seniors to shop, run errands, work, and visit their families. It saves energy and discourages suburban sprawl.
That's why Marc Stier is a leader of the Philadelphia Transit Campaign, a broad state-wide coalition of labor leaders, community groups, and business groups to help get more funding for SEPTA.
That group brought enough pressure on the state government to secure funding to prevent massive SEPTA fare increases and service reductions.
The Philadelphia Daily News (March 1, 2005) describes that win:
| I say a good part of the credit goes to grass-roots groups like the Pennsylvania Transit Coalition, which started out as a Philly-based group of activist riders but grew to include a large regional membership that numbered into the thousands.
"People should realize that it was because of them, because everyone who had an interest in our public-transit system rallied together and got the word out," said Marc Stier, an organizer of the Pennsylvania Transit Campaign. "They were willing to get on buses and come out to Harrisburg to make their voices heard, and they deserve to feel really good about that."… CONGRATULATIONS! See what can happen when you get politically organized? |
The Transit Coalition continues to fight for a major funding increase in SEPTA to improve Philadelphia's public transportation.
